Licensing the music from the rightholders is very important to us, as we believe it is the only way of working with ethics in the music industry. One of the main purpose of our trips is therefore to look for the musicians and if they are deceased then search for their families. We always rely upon local people to guide and help us get to the right people.
In the first seconds of this video you can see Mr. Socrates, a music producer in the 80s and 90s who lives in Kinshasa. Actively willing to help us, Mr. Socrates managed to find many families. We are very grateful for his essential work on this project and the many joyful moments we shared around a record or a beer.
One of the families we encountered is the Checain family, as showcased in this video. Jhonny and Pitscho Lola are Lola Checain’s sons, the composer of “Lolo Soulfire”, the song that resonates in your ears. Checain was a member of Orchestre O.K. Jazz for 25 years, the band that dominated the Congolese music scene since the late 1950s.
At first Checain performed only European and American songs, but after a while he began performing Jazz and Rumba too. Over the years he became one of the most faithful musician the great Franco ever had and a witness to the comings and goings that characterised the band. He toured with O.K. Jazz until the beginning 1990s.
