Upon our arrival in Kinshasa, the first encounter we made was with the Soki family, thanks to Mr. Socrates and his connections. The song "Nganga" by Maxime and Emile Soki, better known as "Les Frères Soki", was part of our selection. In times when young musicians were emerging throughout Kinshasa, the Soki Brothers achieved great success and played a leading role with their Orchestre Bella-Bella.
The Soki family used to live in the Kasa-Vubu neighbourhood, where rehearsals were taking place four days a week on the family plot. We can only imagine how living the place must have felt. But since the brothers are gone things have completely changed.
Far away from the city center, in a very poor area, the remaining Soki family hardly make ends meet. From the mother to the great grandson, everyone is living under the same roof. As we entered the courtyard, they came together to welcome us. We got lucky and met Zizina, Emile Soki’s infamous daughter, who had a song dedicated to her in 1981.
After a quick chat we signed the contract, scanned a few fotos and left to go back to town where Emile Soki’s son and older brother were waiting for us. Interviewing Baudouin Soki was very helpful as he gave us insights on his brothers life. But we were still missing elements about the musical background. It is only after meeting Dede Mpongo, lead guitarist of Orchestre Bella-Bella that we got the full picture.
