SOFIA Cathedral was founded in 1037 during the reign of Yaroslav the Wise. The temple stood in the center of the city of Yaroslavl on a large square, where the streets from all the gates converged. The cathedral remained the center of the Russian metropolis until the end of the 13th century. The first school and library in Russia were founded here. In the 15th century, the temple was looted twice. In 1416, this was done by Edygei. In 1484 - Mengli-Girey. In 1596, the cathedral became Uniate for a while. Major reconstruction works in the cathedral were carried out in 1630-1690 under Metropolitans Peter Mohyla, Gedeon Chetvertynskyi and Varlaam Yasynskyi. During this period, the cathedral acquired the appearance that has been preserved to this day. Sophia Cathedral, to a large extent, has preserved its original architectural forms. It is a large, five-nave, cross-domed, thirteen-story building, surrounded on three sides by galleries and two towers. Inside the towers there are stairs leading to the choirs. The interior of the cathedral is decorated with world-famous mosaics and frescoes by Byzantine and ancient Russian masters.
