The Boers are the descendants of Dutch and German colonists, the first of whom arrived in South Africa in 1652, and lived as farmers and pastoralists in the Cape region. The local white settlers called themselves "Afrikaanders" or "Afrikaans".
Around 1800, the number of British military forces began to increase in those regions, and with them the missionaries of the Church of England. Disagreements soon arose between the "Afrikaans" and the English over the treatment of the local black residents. The English, under the influence of the ideas of the French Revolution of 1789, equalized the rights of blacks and whites, while the Boers-Calvinists had a slave-owning system. With the establishment of the Cape Colony in 1807, the British banned the slave trade. The Boers obtained residence permits and passports for the native Hottentots from the British colonial administration. According to this example, in a century and a half, apartheid will be established in South Africa. Actions against the continued inhumane treatment of black laborers intensified the antagonism between the British and the Boers and ultimately led to the "Great African Trek" to the northeast in 1835-1838. The Boers crossed the Vaal and Orange Rivers, and founded the Orange Free State there in 1842. In 1853, they founded the second Boer Republic of the Transvaal. With the discovery of diamonds in the Kimberley and the mining of gold near Johannesburg from 1886, British interest in these areas increased. Despite objections from the Orange Free State, Great Britain annexed diamond-rich Griqualand in 1867. The first attempt to annex the Transvaal failed in 1884. It brought the country recognition of its independence as the Republic of South Africa under the leadership of President Paulus ("Oma") Kruger. Cecil Rhodes was the driving force behind the British conquest policy. Gaining great influence through the acquisition of diamond deposits, he pushed the imperial idea of an African continent under the rule of Great Britain under the slogan "From Cape to Cairo Cope-to-Cairo". Being the Prime Minister of the Cape Colony from 1890, he prepared the annexation of the Boer republics and was forced to resign in 1896 because of the Jameson affair. Leander Starr Jameson, supported by Rhodes, staged an unsuccessful coup d'état against President Kruger. The congratulatory telegram sent to Krueger by the German Emperor Wilhelm II was perceived in London as hostile to the British and went down in history as the "Kruger Dispatch." It also gave the Boers hope that the German Reich would support their interests. Krueger learned that this was by no means realistic during his trip to Europe after the outbreak of the Boer War, when he pleaded in vain for help from Europe and the German Reich. Under the pretext of wanting to fight for the equal rights of the "Whitlanders", i.e. foreigners who lived in the Boer republics, Great Britain again attacked the Transvaal and the Orange Free State in 1899. After fierce fighting, lasting several years, the military attack of the British ended on May 31, 1902 with the establishment of the British crown colonies, Orange and Transvaal. @UGF
