STORYLINE
There were angry scenes in Kosovo's capital on Wednesday as police used pepper spray to disperse an angry crowd protesting against the signing of a deal to privatise the country's electricity distribution network.
Protesters tried to gain access to the main government building in Pristina before being moved away from the forecourt by police in full riot gear.
Police tried to seal off access to the building but some of the demonstrators managed to scale the iron gates, while others tried to dislodge them.
Tempers flared on both sides and police in the end resorted to using pepper spray to hold back angry protesters.
A number of demonstrators who managed to climb the gates were detained.
Opposition activist Shpend Ahmeti accused the government of underselling "the wealth of Kosovo's public" by signing a 26 million euro (34 million US dollar) deal with Turkish consortium Calik&Limak.
Critics have said the deal is flawed and was not open to public scrutiny.
Kosovo is one of Europe's poorest regions and the government hopes that privatisation can kick-start its moribund economy.
