In this episode of the Hall of Fame Connections series, we draw the line from a Pirates legend to one of the game’s most famous curses. How?
In his final regular season at bat on September 30, 1972, Roberto Clemente collected his 3,000th hit – a double off of the Mets’ Jon Matlack. Twelve seasons earlier, Clemente was a member of the 1960 Pirates that took home the World Championship thanks to the heroic efforts of Bill Mazeroski.
Mazeroski’s most famous home run was the walk-off homer in the 1960 World Series, but he had been hitting long bombs long before that. In high school, Maz also hit a homer off of Phil Niekro.
Niekro went 17-1 in his four-year high school career. His only loss came via Mazeroski’s home run against him in his freshman year in 1954, a few weeks before Maz was signed by Pittsburgh. Niekro went on to have a 24-year big league career and was teammates with his brother Joe for several seasons on both the Braves and Yankees.
Joe was teammates with Phil during some of Phil’s key career moments, including his 300th career win (October 6, 1985 – both were on the Yankees). Joe, while with Houston, also hit his only career homer off of Phil in 1976. In retirement, Joe taught neighbor Chelsea Baker how to throw the knuckleball before he passed away in 2006.
Using the knuckleball as her “out pitch,” Baker threw two perfect Little League games within 12 months of each other. In 2014, while still in high school, Baker threw BP to three Rays players: Evan Longoria, David Price, and José Molina. Joe Maddon, manager of the Rays at the time, was quoted as saying, “She knows what she’s doing out there … it’s not a gimmick.”
Maddon went on to become the manager of the Chicago Cubs in 2015 and led the club to their first World Series win since 1908 in 2016, breaking the 108-year-old curse on the club.
