In this episode of the Hall of Fame Connections series, we draw the line from a modern-day Bronx hero to a legendary Yankee. How?

Derek Jeter is the only player to collect 3,000 or more hits with the Yankees. On July 9, 2011, the Yankees captain reached the milestone when he blasted a third-inning home run off Tampa Bay pitcher David Price, becoming just the second player to hit a homer for hit No. 3,000.

The first major leaguer to hit a home run for his 3,000th career hit was Wade Boggs, who connected off Indians pitcher Chris Haney at Tropicana Field, August 7, 1999.

Boggs’s 3,000th hit came in his final big league season of 1999, but another memorable event for Boggs occurred the season before he reached the majors. In 1981, with Boggs playing for the AAA Pawtucket Red Sox, the Rochester Red Wings came to town for an early-season series. On April 18, the teams started what would become the longest game in major or minor league history. The clubs played a record-breaking 33 innings over three days: April 18-19 and June 23, 1981. Pawtucket finally won the game, 3-2, when Dave Koza drove in the winning run in the bottom of the 33rd inning.

Two future Hall of Famers played in the marathon game: Wade Boggs and Cal Ripken Jr. Ripken made his big league debut later in the 1981 season, and the next season Boggs made his big league debut ... against Ripken’s Orioles. Ultimately, Ripken would go on to set a longevity record of a different kind: breaking Lou Gehrig’s “unbreakable” streak of consecutive games played with his own run of 2,632 straight games played ... “The Streak.” Previously, Gehrig had played in an “unbreakable” record 2,130 straight games.
