Today I'm discussing an interesting statistic that I recently came across - why most Google employees quit after only 1.1 years on average.
We all know that working for Google is a highly sought-after position- full of amazing benefits, a cutting edge workspace and an innovative, collaborative culture. You'd think that the overwhelming majority of employees would stay for much longer than 1.1 years - but the truth may surprise you.
First of all, let's examine what one year at Google looks like. Obviously, it's different for each employee, but some of the typical activities and experiences include more than just coding and developing software. There are weekly team and project meetings, intense training sessions, exposure to the powerful software being created, networking events and more.
So what really causes people to leave Google after such a short amount of time? The main reason is the intense work environment. Recently, there have been reports of employees working many hours of overtime, which can be a big strain on health, relationships and overall well-being. Even if you enjoy the job and the people you work with, a long and tedious work schedule can be quite daunting. Furthermore, working for such an innovative and fast paced company also means that teams often change, and that projects come to an abrupter end. This can make it difficult to invest in a project or develop strong relationships.
In addition, a good portion of the work being done in the tech industry is highly specialized, so it's not uncommon for a successful employee to be recruited by a competing company for a higher salary or more specialized job. Google is no exception, and the fierce competition for talented workers means that good employees are constantly being sought after from other firms.
For all of these reasons, the amount of time that most people spend working at Google is really just a drop in the bucket. All in all, it's easy to see why the average length of a job at Google would be so short.
