Here's a promotional sales tape (with a bit of tracking problems recurrent at various points in this piece) from Teledyne Packard Bell promoting the Cartrivision tape system, appropriately titled The New World of Cartridge Television, hosted by Teledyne Packard Bell Manager of Product and Sales Training, George O'Leary, and assisted by Cheryl Miller. (actress best known for her role in the 1960s TV show "Daktari")

Starting with scenes from Casino Royale [1967], then leading to opening titles (and theme song as by Herb Alpert and The Tijuana Brass) followed by...

...George introducing the premise of this system, then introducing Cheryl who displays as George describes the various features therein - home video recorder/player, cartridges to record and play, and camera/microphone to make home movies

Functions include how to insert a cartridge into the machine (with scenes from The Football Follies); three different cartridges - black with pre-recorded programs (to buy), red with full-length movies (to rent; excerpt from "Bridge on the River Kwai" is shown), and color-coded (by running time) blanks

Importance of demonstrating product in order to sell it, with the various functions and switches (on both the right and left sides) shown close-up; ability to record home movies with sound and conventional or closed-circuit TV, and in color yet (excerpt from "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" is shown)

A "how-to" on operating the machine follows, with excerpts from Gadabout Gaddis: The Flying Fisherman, basketball game and (probably) "Cat Ballou" shown; followed by Cheryl about the way the home camera apparatus works (alas, can only record in black and white)

After all is said and done, George (with Cheryl on opposite side) closes demonstration

End credits (against a backdrop of a wall of pre-recorded show and film titles): [note - ending music had to be lowered in volume to avoid YouTube copyright issue]

"...I'm here to welcome you to the exciting new world of Cartridge Television...the ultra-new cartridge television system, created by Teledyne Packard Bell."

This did not air on any TV station, but we can assume it was produced in 1972 since Cartrivision went out of business in 1973.

Thanks to original Cartrivision collector Larry Osterhoudt for providing a transfer of this tape to share here. He notes, "I got [the tape] with the Cartrivision unit I bought from Olsen Electronics in December 1975. The salesman at Olsen threw it in with the package. As far as I know it's the only copy [left in existence].

About The Museum of Classic Chicago Television:

The MCCTv (FuzzyMemoriesTV) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit whose primary mission is the preservation and display of off-air, early home videotape recordings (70s to early 80s, mostly) recorded off of TV (in Chicago or other cities now too); things which would likely be lost if not sought out and preserved digitally. If you have any old 1970s videotapes recorded off of TV please email: [email protected] Even though (mostly) short clips are displayed here, we preserve the entire broadcasts in our archives - the complete programs with breaks (or however much is present on the tape), for historical preservation. For information on how to help in our mission, to donate or lend tapes to be converted to digital, please e-mail [email protected] Thank you for your help!
