MORE INFO:
My very first smartphone review! Microsofts latet flagship, the Lumia 950, sparked my curiosity. So, I asked if Microsoft were willing to send lend me one to review, which they did. And this is the result. All filmed with Sony a7s, and natural sunlight. Any questions? Feel free to comment =)
NOTES:
It seems some people have gotten a bad first impression of this phone, due to some bugs when it was brand new(?). And there seem to a general prejudice against Lumia phones (kinda like a lot of people hate Apple's iPhone). But the truth is that they're great phones, with top notch hardware and by far the best cameras - and in every price range. At least that's my opinion. But, the lack and/or underdeveloped apps is a deal breaker for a lot of people. Still, a lot of people don't use/need that many apps anyway. Is it perfect? Of course not, but which phone is? At least I see no reason to hate it =)
At first glance, it looks like a pretty standard smartphone. And if you compare it even looks a little dull. But as soon as you turn on the screen, you get the premuium feel of a high-end smartphone. The screen is a staggering 2560x1440, and at 5,7 inches, it gives you a pixel density 565 - which ties with the S6. Though it may not be as bright as iPhone or Samsung, it’s certainly looks beautiful, and feels really responsive. You can also get it in an XL version, but for me, 5,2 is more than enought.
It’s got an eight core processor, which makes it really powerful, and it’s able to run some of the most graphic demanding games.
This makes it a potentially really good for entertainment. Though I’m a little dissapointed the only speaker is in the back, which makes the sound a little underwhelming.
But all in all, it works pretty good.
Of course I have to mention the camera, which has always been one of the strongest sides of the Nokia/Lumia phones. And this is no exeption.
Here I’m comparing it to the iPhone 6s, and the Samsung s6.
The 950 has a ton of better image quality. It also has full manuall controll, and optical stabilization, which for me as a filmmaker and photographer is a huge plus. One thing I don’t like though, is that if you want to look at a picture you’ve just taken, you have to wait for several seconds while the image is processed. But still, it’s a price I’m willing to pay for the truly amazing quality.
The video quality it’s a more close race. They all look shoot in gorgeous 4k ultra HD. But if I had to choose, I would give the medal to Lumia 950.
The lack of apps is the one thing that’s always brought to the table when discussing Windows mobiles. But honestly, pretty much all of the apps I use the most are here, including - Facebook, Youtube, Messenger, Instagram, Dropbox, public transportation, my bank and Netflix. Snapchat however, is sorely missed. But as WIndows phones populairty will grow, this will surely be fixed.
In terms of battery time, it’s pretty average, but with it USB-C, it charges superfast. You can even charge it wirelessly. It also has input for micro-SD, which gives you the option to get a lot more extra storage.
Another really cool function is the face recognition. Now this is something I was really sceptical at first, but it actually works! It’s still in beta, but I’ve tested with many different people, and in low light, but it’s always fast and efficient. Personally, I think this works even better than Apples and Androids fingerprint. It even gives you a little wink and hello, which makes it feel like it really knows you.
I also want to mention that I applaud Microoft for NOT trying to copy iPhone or Android - but creating something truly original. I didn’t care much for the previous operating systems, but Windows 10 feels like really elegant and user friendly. And you have a ton of option to customize everything from your home screen to the colors of your display. After many years with pretty stagnant iPhone and Android, this feels really refreshing.
So - in conlusion - not only is the Lumia 950 one the best and most powerful smartphones currently on the marked, but it’s also got quite a lot of innovative and awe-inspiring tricks up it’s sleeve. I think it’s cool that Microsoft that has been an underdog for many years is finally gaining some notwworthy foothold. It may not perfect, but it’s certainly is a benchmark in the future of smartphones. A future I want to be a part of.
I’m genuienly impressed with the Lumia 950, and highly recomend it!
