Microsoft Excel Tutorial - Turn Data Sideways in Excel with a Formula.

Welcome to the MrExcel podcast, where we bring you the best tips and tricks for mastering Excel. In this episode, we will be discussing how to turn data sideways with a formula. Don't forget to subscribe to our playlist as we will be podcasting the entire book.

Have you ever needed to take data that is going across and make it go down? This is commonly known as transposing in Excel. You can easily do this by copying the data and then using the paste transpose function. However, this creates a one-time snapshot and if the original data changes, it will not be reflected in the transposed data. In this video, we will show you three different methods for transposing data that will update automatically when the original data changes.

The first method is using the TRANSPOSE function, which is a formula that returns multiple results. This method requires you to use CTRL+Shift+Enter to create an array formula. While this method works great, it can be confusing for those who are not familiar with array formulas. To prevent accidental deletion of rows, we recommend using the =2 formula in a hidden column to protect the rows you want to keep.

The second method involves using the INDEX and ROW functions. This method allows you to specify the position of the data you want to transpose, but you will need to manually change the formula for each row. To make this process easier, we recommend using the ROW(1:1) function, which will automatically update the row number as you copy the formula down.

The third method is a little trickier, but it can be useful in certain situations. This method involves using the Find and Replace function to change all the equal signs (=) in your formulas to caret signs (^). This will turn your formulas into text, which you can then transpose and convert back to formulas using Find and Replace again. This method is not recommended for everyday use, but it can come in handy for certain scenarios.
