Microsoft Excel Tutorial - Technique to change all worksheets using Group Mode.
Welcome to another episode of the MrExcel podcast, sponsored by the book "MrExcel XL"! In this episode, we will be discussing how to quickly make copies of sheets using the Group Mode feature in Excel. This is a powerful tool, but it can also be dangerous if not used carefully.
In episode 1981, I showed you how to use CTRL drag to quickly create copies of sheets. However, this violates a business rule that I like to call the "Manager 15 Minute Rule". This rule states that when a manager asks for a task, they usually change their mind within 15 minutes. This means that instead of making one change, we would have to make 12 changes for each month of the year.
To avoid this, we can use the Group Mode feature. Simply select the January sheet, and then shift-click on December to group all the sheets together. This means that any changes made to the January sheet will also be applied to all the other sheets in the group. However, this can be dangerous if we forget that we are in Group Mode.
To avoid making changes to the wrong sheet, I have a simple trick. I always have a sticky note on my wall that says "Bill... You are in Group Mode!" This serves as a reminder to always double check before making any changes.
To exit Group Mode, there are three different methods depending on the selection of sheets. If not all sheets are selected, simply click on a sheet that is not in the group. If all sheets are selected, click on a sheet that is not the active sheet. And if you want to reliably exit Group Mode, right-click on any sheet tab and choose "Ungroup Sheets".
I want to thank Olga K for suggesting the Group Mode feature, as it was one of her ideas that was crowdsourced for the book "MrExcel XL". If you're enjoying these tips, make sure to subscribe to the MrExcel XL playlist and check out the book for even more helpful Excel tips.
