I think that waiting for pathology results is almost as hard as the surgery itself. For those seven days, I worried incessantly about my lymph nodes. Would they find that the cancer had spread beyond my breast? If yes, how far? Would I need additional surgery? Would I need chemotherapy? It was at this moment when I was, absolutely, the most vulnerable.
Thankfully, the results showed clear lymph nodes and clear surgical margins. Yes, there was cancer in my left breast but it had not progressed beyond the milk duct. What a relief... our emotions were off the charts.
I also reveal the scar... because I want patients and their family members to understand how big this surgery is. We must treat patients with kindness and compassion. We should not expect anything other than rest for a few weeks and when you see these scars and drains, I think you'll agree.
