Breast Cancer Day 22
Natural disasters don't stop for breast cancer. Can you imagine desperately needing surgery or chemotherapy only to have a wildfire, hurricane, earthquake and, of course, war prevent you from getting life saving care? We had a big fire start that was very close to my warehouse and my sisters farm.
See, here's the thing. These are not the fires of my childhood where a grass fire might start and burn a dozen acres before our heroic volunteer firefighters would bring it down. Starting in 2017, we began to experience fire storms. These fires are unstoppable. Driven by high winds, they can travel a football field a minute. Embers are often a mile ahead of the fire line starting more fires. You can't defend your home against these fires really. Yes, we all work hard to reduce as much as we can, but once they rage, we have to be on point.
In 2022, my home nearly burned. The fire travelled 8 miles in 45 minutes, breached the hillside above my home and we literally drove for our lives. We thought for sure it would all be gone but a bulldozer saved our small neighborhood.
So, when fires start, we are very very watchful which is why, this night, I stayed up for hours relaying the position of the fire to family members who were on the ground at the ranch watering buildings down.
I hope and pray that I don't have to evacuate while I'm recovering from surgery. That scares me to death.
