Top 4 BLOODIEST battles of Mongols | How to STOP the Mongols (1221-1260) (FULL EPISODE). Did you know there was a time when Egypt played a huge role in stopping a massive empire from spreading even further? The Mongols, known for conquering everywhere they went, had their sights set on the Middle East. But the Egyptians, specifically the Mamluks, weren't about to let that happen.
It all started with Genghis Khan, the founder and first khan of the Mongol Empire,
He was a visionary leader who knew that to ensure the empire's longevity, he needed to build strong institutions and promote people based on their abilities rather than their family ties. This approach was designed to keep the empire stable even after his death. Unlike Huns of Atila the Great, whose invasion did not create a state, the Mongols established political, cultural and economic ties with other regions.

When Mongke Khan became Great Khan in 1251, he began a detailed implementation of the plans of his grandfather Genghis Khan to create a world empire. He appointed his brother, Hulagu Khan, to lead the Mongol campaign in Western Asia with the most famous nomad force back then. “The Mongols had a decimal system of military organization, unlike the other medieval armies that would just be a big group of heterogeneous people; the Mongols had units of 10, 100, 1000 and 10 000 troops and could cover 100 miles in a day. But there was a grim law —if one man deserted, the other nine in his unit faced execution.

The command structure was clear and orders were traveling down from the most supreme commanders to the commanders of smaller units.
Because of a clear chain of command, it was very difficult to infiltrate spies that would use the heat of the battle to spread rumors and mislead the army.
By the 13th century, thanks to their large and powerful army, the Mongols had pushed deep into Europe, reaching as far as Poland, Hungary, and the Balkans. Their advance into the Middle East, however, brought the Muslim world to the brink of extinction. But there was one final line of defense—the Mamluk Sultanate of Egypt, standing strong against the terrifying Mongol tide.
The Mamluks were an elite group of warrior-slaves who had overthrown the previous rulers of Egypt in 1250, establishing their own sultanate. Becoming a Mamluk wasn’t just about joining a regular army; it was more like entering an exclusive club of elite soldiers. Recruited as young men, often bought as slaves, they were taken to live and train in the Citadel of Cairo. Their upbringing was intense, with daily drills in archery, mounted combat, and physical training. Unlike other armies, the Mamluks had no family ties or political allegiances outside their military training, which made them incredibly loyal and disciplined, fully dedicated to their sultan.
In contrast, the Mongols were born and raised as warriors, learning through real-world experience. As nomads, they were constantly on the move, training through life itself. They excelled in rapid maneuvers, hit-and-run tactics, and using speed to outsmart their enemies. Their armor, made of layered leather and iron, was lightweight, allowing them to move swiftly on horseback. Their most feared weapon was the composite bow, which allowed them to shoot arrows with deadly accuracy even while riding at full speed.
