Lake Winnipeg, A Large Freshwater Lake, Situated In The Central Part Of Canada, Covering Roughly 24,387 Square-kilometres In Total Surface Area, Lake Winnipeg Is The Eleventh-largest Freshwater Lake On Earth By Area. It Is Canada's Sixth-largest Freshwater Lake (If We Include The Great Lakes) And The Third-largest Freshwater Lake Situated Entirely Within Canada After Great Bear Lake And Great Slave Lake.

Situated Within The Province Of Manitoba, Lake Winnipeg, Along With Lake Winnipegosis And Lake Manitoba Are The Reminent Of The Prehistoric Glacial Lake Agassiz (As Are Nearby Cedar Lake And The Lake Of The Woods). Lake Agassiz Was A Massive Freshwater Lake That Formed As A Result Of Deglaciation (Melting Of Ice Sheet) Roughly 12000 Years Ago. At Its Peak, It Covered Roughly 260,000 Square Kilometers In Area And Was Larger Than All Of The Modern Great Lakes Combined. As The Water Of Lake Agassiz Drained Into Hudson Bay, The Massive Lake Disappeared Roughly 8,000 Years Ago, Leaving The Smaller Lakes Such As Lake Winnipeg, Winnipegosis And Manitoba.

Lake Winnipeg, Lies At An Altitude Of 713 Feet (217 Meters), And Is Roughly 264 Miles (425 Km) Long And Is 68 Miles (109 Km) Wide At Its Widest Point.Lake Winnipeg Can Be Separated Into A Larger, Deeper Northern Basin And A Smaller, Shallower Southern Basin. Both Basins Are Connected Through A 2.5 Km-wide Channel Called The Narrows. Although Covering A Large Surface Area, Lake Winnipeg Is Relatively Shallow. It Has An Average Depth Of 12 Meters (39 Feet) And A Maximum Depth Of Approximately 36 Meters (118 Feet). Lake Winnipeg Shoreline Is Roughly 1750 Km Long.

Lake Winnipeg Is Fed By Several Major Rivers, The Saskatchewan River Flows From The West Through Cedar Lake. The Red River Flows In From The South Whilst The Winnipeg River Enters From The Southeast. These Three Make Up More Than Half Of The Lake Winnipeg Total Inflow . The Dauphin River, The Bloodvein River, Berens River, And The Poplar River Are Other Major Rivers Flowing Into Lake Winnipeg. The Only Outflow From The Lake Is Through The Nelson River, Which Drains Into The Hudson Bay.

Lake Winnipeg Has The Largest Drainage Basin Of Any Lake In Canada, The Lake's Drainage Basin Measures Roughly 982,900 Square Kilometers. Its Drainage Basin Is Roughly 40 Times Larger Than The Lake’s Surface, Making It One Of The Largest In The World. Lake Winnipeg Drainage Basin Is Significant In Size Because It Collects Water From A Vast Area Of Land Due To Its Big River Systems . The Lake's Drainage Basin Covers A Large Portion Of Central Canada, Including Parts Of Ontario, Saskatchewan, Alberta, And Manitoba, As Well As Portions Of The Northern United States.
