Baffin Bay Is Bordered By Several Significant Islands, Baffin Island, The Fifth-largest Island In The World, Is Situated To The West Of The Bay, Ellesmere Island Lies To The North And Greenland, The World's Largest Island, Is Situated To The East.
Baffin Bay Is Sometimes Considered As Marginal Sea Of Atlantic Ocean, And Sometimes Of The Arctic Ocean According To Various Sources , However As Per The International Hydrographic Organization (Iho), It Is A Marginal Sea Of The Arctic Ocean.
The Bay Spans Roughly 1,450 Km From North To South And Has A Width Varying Between 110 And 650 Km. The Average Depth Of Baffin Bay Is Around 861 m (2,825 ft), While its Maximum depth is 2,136 m (7,008 ft).
The Bay Is Connected To The Arctic Ocean In The North Through Nares Strait, Jones And Lancaster Sounds, And To The Labrador Sea In The South By Davis Strait.
Baffin Bay Experiences A Polar Climate, With Cold Temperatures And Sea Ice, Especially During Winter. It Is Not Navigable Most Of The Year Because Of The Ice Cover And High Density Of Ice And Icebergs In The Open Areas.
The Baffin Bay, Davis Strait And The Labrador Sea Are Part Of The Northwest Passage, A Sea Route Through The Arctic Ocean, Connecting The Atlantic And Pacific Oceans Via The Arctic Archipelago Of Canada.
