Numbers

One two three four
And it goes forever
I thought it started with one
But then I understood it begins with none
No! No! I was wrong
It went down or left or to the negative forever
I buy or borrow and I add one
I give or lose and I subtract one
One nose, one tongue, one head
Two eyes, two ears, two hands
Two nipples, two legs, two nostrils
Two testicles, two kidneys
Ten fingers, ten toes
Many teeth, many heartbeats, many sensations
I can sense a number
With a sight, touch, taste, smell, or hearing
Two cats, three tastes, one bad smell, or four sounds
One touch on the head or two taps on my tummy
Even degrees of temperatures I can feel
Too cold, or too hot, or just the apt warmth
And them degrees add to three in my mind
For every 100
There exists a negative 100
For every 10,000
There exists a negative 10,000
For all infinity
There exists a negative infinity
Does that mean we add all numbers;
And we face zero as the sum of all numbers?
Oh! Zero, what is that thing?
Is it a thing? Or is it nothing?
Two cows and when they leave: that’s a zero
What if there was no cow in the first place?
Is it still zero?
Three dogs and when they leave: that’s a zero
When cows or dogs or books, when they all come,
And when they all leave;
Is it zero? Are they all just the same zero?
If I had nothing to begin with?

Zero, one, two, three, four
It all meant the same
But what it all meant?
What is this number-ness?
3 apples 3 oranges
3 potatoes 3 ideas
3 stars 3 days
It all has this three-ness
Fingers or markings or notations
We use them for denotations
But what are they really?
All these numbers we use daily?
Perhaps we tick some neurons
Perhaps our brain counts
With some neuron-fingers
And make us understand
You can’t touch a number
As if it was a cucumber
Mathematicians love a number
Ordinary people sometimes find it cumbersome
Perhaps the lack of ordinary quality
Make them numbers easy for utility
As you can take a number
Use it to count plumber, lumber, or cucumber
