Microsoft Excel Tutorial: PowerPivot Data Analyst 10 - DAX Measures.
Welcome to chapter 10 of PowerPivot for the Data Analyst, where we will be diving into the world of DAX measures. This chapter may be the most challenging, but trust me, it's worth it. DAX measures are the most powerful feature in PowerPivot and will take your data analysis to the next level.
In this video, we will be exploring the CALCULATE function, which is similar to SUMIFS in Excel. However, what makes CALCULATE so unique is that it automatically takes into account all the filters applied to a specific cell in a Pivot table. This means that instead of calculating for each individual record, DAX measures only need to be calculated for each cell in the Pivot table, making it much more efficient.
Let's take a closer look at one cell in our Pivot table. We can see that there are four filters applied to this cell - region, division, month, and mall developer. With the CALCULATE function, we can override one of these filters and focus on a specific aspect of our data. For example, we can create a DAX measure that will show us the total handbag sales, regardless of what is selected in the division filter.
To create a DAX measure, simply go to the PowerPivot tab and choose "New Measure". From there, we can build our formula using the CALCULATE function and specifying the SUM of sales from our demo table. We can then override the division filter by specifying "Handbags" in our formula. This allows us to compare handbag sales to other divisions, such as jewelry, and gain valuable insights.
DAX measures are a game-changer in data analysis and this chapter covers a lot of interesting calculations that can be done using them. In the next video, we will be exploring time intelligence functions and how they can be used in conjunction with DAX measures to compare sales from different time periods.
