I must say right away that in the San Bernardino National Reserve, which is located in southern California (USA), people disappear regularly. This area is wooded and hilly. There are also high mountains, but with gentle slopes. The highest is Mount San Gorgonio with a height of 3505 meters above sea level. This is a favorite spot for scouts. Their squads regularly climb this mountain, training endurance and mastering survival skills.
Another squad of scouts appeared near the mountain on July 19, 1991. This squad included a 12-year-old boy scout named Jared Negret. In total, there were 14 youths ready to climb the summit. But "climb" is too loud. Trails led to the top. They were not at all included in the category of increased difficulty, they just went up quite steeply, and people had to climb 3.5 km up the mountain, experiencing a load on their legs. At the same time, there was no need to have any climbing equipment with you.
The only thing that was required was good light and strong leg muscles. As for Negret, the boy went on his first campaign as a Boy Scout. He was somewhat plump, loose, and therefore the child had a difficult time. But he struggled to keep up with his more muscular and lean colleagues.
And give Jared his due. His desire not to hit his face in the mud was so strong that he went 3 km uphill as the last group. But when about 500 meters remained to the top, Negret felt that he could not go further. He was completely exhausted, and the head of the group praised the boy for his persistence, but ordered him to stay where he was, rest, catch his breath and wait for his colleagues to return.
