Dennis Lloyd Martin (born June 20, 1962) is an American child who went missing on June 14, 1969, in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee at the age of six. The prospecting operations were the largest in the history of the park, involving about 1,400 searchers in an area of 56 square miles (150 km 2).
Dennis Martin, a six-year-old resident of Knoxville, traveled to Great Smoky Mountains National Park with his father, grandfather and older brother on Father's Day weekend in 1969. The trip to the camp was a family tradition for the Martins. The family hiked from Cades Cove to Russell Field and stayed overnight. The next day they traveled to Spence Field, near the Appalachian Trail, where they planned to spend the night. Martin disappeared on June 14 at 4:30 pm, intending to surprise the adults with his brother and other children from the separate family with whom Martin had camped; The last time he was seen by his father, who hid behind the bushes, intending to surprise adults with other children. After he had not seen each other for about five minutes and when all the other children returned to the camp, his father became worried and began looking for him. His father ran the trail for nearly two miles until he was convinced there was no further. A few hours later, they turned to the National Park Service rangers for help.
