Mustang Horse Races to Arctic Reindeer Herds: Nima and Edik's Journey with Their Animals | SLICE
In the remote Mustang region of Nepal, a young boy named Nima dreams of becoming a skilled horseman, a role of great honor in his community. A man without a horse is seen as unworthy, and Nima’s father has promised him that one day he will participate in the grand horse race of Dzar. Each August, Nima’s family embarks on a journey across the Mustang mountains to reach the festival, where they celebrate the legacy of the Compas warriors and the mastery of horsemanship.
Far from the warm peaks of Nepal, beyond Russia’s Arctic Circle, 14-year-old Edik from the Nénets community begins a different but equally challenging journey: becoming a reindeer herder. With over 4,000 reindeer in his family’s herd, Edik’s father, Guéna, initiates him into their ancient traditions, starting with learning to lasso and guard the reindeer against wolves. To prove his skills, Edik’s final test is to venture alone into the icy tundra to recover part of the herd lost in a snowstorm.
In these two lands, Nima and Edik embark on parallel paths, each striving to master their animals, earn respect, and carry forward their families’ ancient traditions.
