USA: Spanish Foreign Minister: Accord reaffirmation

U-S Secretary of State, Colin Powell, and Spain's Foreign Minister, Josep Pique, met at the U-S State Department in Washington on Friday to reaffirm an accord signed with the Clinton administration.
An agreement on co-operation on fighting terrorism and cultural and scientific exchanges was signed in Madrid in January by former U-S Secretary of State, Madeleine Albright, just 10 days before the end of Clinton's term of office.
It left intact an agreement that allows U-S forces to use Spanish military bases.
At the U-S State Department the Bush administration reaffirmed the agreement.

"We talked about European issues, European security defense initiative and missile defense, but above all, what we tried to do in this first one-on-one meeting, bilateral meeting, between us, is to establish the kind of close relationship between the two of us that already exists between our two nations."

"We believe that there are many areas of co-operation and collaboration. There are many issues on which we can establish joint policies and Spain is disposed to do this. We have found the U-S is extraordinarily disposed to do this as well."

"I believe we share, both countries, the necessity that they be compatible as is the case with the U-S efforts to build greater defensive capacity. There has to be a collective perception of security and these individual initiatives cannot be detrimental to this collective perception of security."

U-S President George W. Bush will meet Spain's King Juan Carlos next Thursday at the White House.
Among the topics the two leaders will discuss is U-S/Spanish co-operation in NATO.
