BAR 20 and RIDERS OF DEADLINE! Robert Mitchum co-stars in two Hopalong Cassidy western movies. That’s right, WORD’S WAYBACK is presenting a Robert Mitchum/William Boyd double feature. Plus, you’ll see TV’s “Superman,” George Reeves, appearing as Hoppy’s sidekick in one of them. Saddle up and double your fun, film fans, it’s gonna be a wild ride!

The Hopalong Cassidy series is considered the very best of B western series and our special double feature attraction will illustrate why. William Boyd, not the first choice to portray the literary character based on the Clarence Mulford novels. But, once he accepted the part in 1935, there seems to be no one who could ever replace him. Producer Harry "Pop" Sherman loaded the Hoppy films with big production values, solid scripts, top caliber professionals on both sides of the camera and stunning locations. The majority of the Hopalong Cassidy movies were filmed in picturesque Lone Pine, California, amidst the unique Alabama Hills rock formations. Both movies we are presenting with Mitchum, BAR 20 and RIDERS OF THE DEADLINE, were filmed there.

1943’s BAR 20 is first and it’s one of my favorite Hopalong Cassidy films. The Hoppy movies were Trio Westerns, like the Three Mesquiteers and Rough Riders series. Hoppy and two sidekicks. Andy Clyde as California Carlson took over for George Hayes who left to become “Gabby” and Roy Rogers’ sidekick at Republic. Sidekick #3 originally was James Ellison and then Russell Hayden. In BAR 20, sidekick #3 is THE ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN actor George Reeves who takes on the role of Hoppy’s romantically inclined saddle pal.

Both Reeves and Mitchum had appeared in small parts in earlier Hoppy films, often as bad guys under the watchful eye of evil Victor Jory. BAR 20 gives them both a chance to break out with more substantial characters, but Jory is still this film’s chief bad guy. BAR 20 is lots of fun you’re in for a treat. You get to see George Reeves doing some very exciting riding during a chase at the end. Wish he’d done more westerns.

Hoppy movie #2 is RIDERS OF THE DEADLINE (1943). Once again Robert Mitchum is featured. This was Mitch’s last Hoppy film before going on to headline his own movies and become a cinema legend. Andy Clyde is back as California and Jimmy Rogers, Will Rogers’ son, is sidekick #3. Hoppy goes undercover to find out who murdered his friend. Guess who’s in the outlaw gang he joins? Robert Mitchum!

Both films were directed by Hoppy’s regular helmer, Lesley Selander. Because of the care that went into making them, the Hopalong Cassidy movies still hold up very well and today.
