Rex Allen stars in “The Homesteaders” as the Frontier Doctor in this episode of A WORD ON WESTERNS. Your destination for westerns.
Rex Allen, of course, was the last of the singing cowboys. His string of action-packed Republic westerns in the 1950s brought the era of the B westerns to a close. Those terrific films were mostly directed by action specialist, William Witney. When the B movie market dried up and viewers drifted to in-home viewing on television, both Rex and director Witney teamed up for, what else, a half hour action filled TV western series called…FRONTIER DOCTOR.
They even brought along Ace cinematographer Bud Thackery. Bud had been behind the camera at Republic for some of their best serials: KING OF THE MOUNTIES & MANHUNT OF MYSTERY ISLAND. Thackery was DP on most of the TALES OF WELLS FARGO and STORIES OF THE CENTURY episodes, too. He also shot one of Clint Eastwood first American movie hits, COOGAN’S BLUFF.
Rex Allen was a terrific singer but also had one of the best voices for movie narration. So, FRONTIER DOCTOR even has narration by Rex. These episodes play like a fast-moving B western. A kid show? This episode, “The Homesteaders” has a classic shoot out finale where the bodies pile up in the street. Guest starring in this episode is Rhodes Reason, younger brother of Rex Reason. Rhodes had starred in the early TV series WHITE HUNTER and appeared in most of the TV westerns during the 50s and 60s. Even did an original STAR TREK. He’s a bad one in this show. Not so bad is actor Ron Hagarthy, “Clipper” on SKY KING. He has a nice role as a bad kid trying to go straight and gives a solid performance. It’s nice to see him get a chance to shine.
