Bob Steele in GALLOPING ROMEO! Free Western Movie with Bob and Gabby Hayes! B Western Action! WOW!
Fast riding Hero & Sidekick! Battling Bob Steele & Gabby Hayes! They were a classic B Western team. George "Gabby" Hayes teamed up with the best. John Wayne, Tom Tyler, Hoot Gibson, William Boyd, Roy Rogers, Randolph Scott, Wild Bill Elliott and John Payne, just to mention a few off the top of my head! Everyone wanted to share the screen with the grizzled sidekick!
John Wayne’s early B Westerns, mostly made at Lone Star, were produced by Paul Malvern and many were directed by Robert N. Bradbury. Bradbury had started as an actor during the silent era and quickly became a much in demand director of westerns.
Robert Bradbury even directed a series of silent short films starring his two young Bradbury boys, THE ADVENTURES OF BILL AND BOB. Well, Bob grew up and was soon starring in his own films as…BOB STEELE. Many of his early B westerns were written and directed by his father. They did GALLOPING ROMEO together in 1933. And…as they say, IT’S A PIP.
One of the regular actors Bradbury used in the films with Wayne, was character actor George Hayes. He wasn’t yet the famous sidekick “Gabby” but, he was Bob’s grizzled sidekick in GALLOPING ROMEO. In fact, that’s his handle in this movie, “Grizzly.”
The leading lady, Doris Hill, began acting at the age of 20 in a silent western starring Tom Tyler, TOM AND HIS PALS. During the silent and early sound era she co-starred with other popular western heroes like Ken Maynard, Hoot Gibson and Tim McCoy. GALLOPING ROMEO is one of several she did with Bob Steele in 1933, before retiring.
Like the John Wayne westerns at Lone Star, this film was photographed by the great cinematographer Archie Stout from FORT APACHE, THE QUIET MAN & HONDO.
This is certainly one of Bob Steele's very best B westerns. There’s also something very unusual about GALLOPING ROMEO…it happens near the beginning and sets the scene for lots of action to come. Bob and “Grizzly” are sitting around a campfire reminiscing about some of their past escapades. It’s an excuse to put together action highlights from some of their past B westerns and a real treat for us fans.
