1492: Conquest of Paradise cover using Zyklus Improvisor
Here's something a little different!
Vangelis was a heavy user of the Zyklus Midi Performance System, and then his own custom version nicknamed "Direct". It's a hardware device that allows the control of multiple synthesizers, looping, arpeggiating and harmonising according to intelligent detection of inputted chords.
This is our recreation of his Main Theme from 1992 film Conquest of Paradise, demonstrating how we think Vangelis would have created the basic track. He then would have added overdubs (re-recording the choir, adding percussion and extra synth pads, etc).
So imagine you're Ridley Scott, sitting down in Vangelis' Nemo Studios, and he's about to play you the main theme for the first time....
