Here’s ‪@DrDanielAmen_BrainHealth‬ of ‪@AmenClinic‬ sharing a study his clinic published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease on the podcast (FULL episode on all streaming platforms - link to full YOUTUBE episode embedded). They took brain SPECT scans of persons with a diagnosis of cannabis use disorder (by DSM-IV + DSM-V criteria) at rest & during a mental concentration task & compared them to healthy controls. These scans demonstrated abnormally low blood flow in virtually every area of the brain, including areas known to be affected by Alzheimer’s pathology such as the hippocampus.

While this study has several limitation that Dr. Nav eludes to (see below), it also shows that frequent cannabis use comes with risks & is definitely NOT innocuous.

Study limitations:
**Sampling Bias**: those with cannabis use disorder may not accurately represent the general population of marijuana users. This could lead to biased results and limit the generalizability of findings.
**Control Group Size**: The control group is significantly smaller (n=92) compared to the marijuana user group (n=982), potentially affecting the statistical power & reliability of the comparisons between groups.
**Cross-Sectional Design**: The study design is cross-sectional, meaning that it captures data at a single point in time. Therefore, it cannot establish causality or determine the direction of the observed associations between marijuana use & cerebral perfusion abnormalities.
**Diagnostic Criteria**: the study does not provide information on the severity of cannabis use disorder or the duration of marijuana use, which could impact cerebral perfusion.
**Potential Confounders**: The study does not adequately control for potential confounding variables such as other substance use, medication use, medical comorbidities, or lifestyle factors (e.g., diet, physical activity) that could influence cerebral perfusion.
