I finally got around to playing this notorious and iconic game and I'm glad that I did. This was my first full playthrough and it was a ton of fun. It was my first time playing it through but I had seen it beaten multiple times so I had a fairly good idea of what to do going in.
Here are some highlights:
Right at the beginning I was screwing around and accidentally spawned an entire fleet of steamrollers. Whoops!
2 minutes, 10 seconds - This game has an odd way of displaying your health. I think certain things can do less than a half of a square of damage but is not reflected visually. It's possible to get hit and it appears that your health didn't diminish at all. Then there's the case here, where it looks like Leonardo is injured during gameplay but appears to have full health in the pause menu.
14 minutes, 45 seconds - Not so sure the developers had this in mind but it is possible to make this jump if you do it exactly right. Otherwise you have to walk all the way around the room.
28 minutes, 20 seconds - If you get knocked down here then you have to repeat the area but you don't lose a life. Right after, I also learned that you can destroy the fire-breathing enemy's fire. This changes nothing.
33 minutes, 15 seconds - You can actually hit the second form of this boss before he even gets a change to move.
40 minutes - Here's another example of how the health is presented strangely. I got hit and it didn't appear to do any damage but I think it does less than a half of a square, which is not represented visually. Maybe.
44 minutes, 10 seconds - For whatever reason there's a full pizza here that is invisible until you jump close to it. Not sure if that was on purpose or not, or if there are other hidden ones like that.
1 hour, 3 minutes - For some reason if you pause in this area you often get a glitched top of the pause menu. Also how did I "climb" through the platform there?
1 hour, 4 minutes - The Technodrome is randomly placed in one of three locations here, and I just so happened to pick the right one on my first guess. This upper right area also happens to be the easiest in my opinion.
1 hour, 5 minutes, 25 seconds - Here's a cool trick to get past the electricity from the Technodrome. Just run to the right side of the screen immediately and duck.
1 hour, 6 minutes, 40 seconds - I was playing with an Xbox Series controller and my controller batteries died here! What luck that all of the threats were gone and I could just be dragged around by the conveyor belt until I frantically replaced them. I wish that controller had a low battery indicator or something. Also, this boss has such strange hitboxes. You seemingly get hit for no reason and aren't sure where to strike. Somehow the upper left part of the tread damaged me? Then when the boss was destroyed, I got damaged by him during the transition! I wonder what happens if you die there.
1 hour, 12 minutes, 35 seconds - These copter looking whirly guys die in one hit from the scroll projectile...but one of them didn't? Can't explain that one.
1 hour, 13 minutes, 15 seconds- You can "hit" the enemy lasers with your weapons? Doesn't seem to do anything though.
1 hour, 13 minutes, 25 seconds - If you stand in this exact location with your nose against the yellow/gold thingy in the background, as long as Shredder is to the left of you he will not be able to hit you. Pretty funny.
1 hour, 14 minutes, 40 seconds - There was a sound glitch here that prevented the music from playing at the title screen after beating the game.
Final thoughts:
What a fun time. There is some jankiness for sure with the hitboxes and the health meter but this game was well worth the time. Big thanks to HalDanGhor for finally giving me the motivation to tackle it! I'm really considering a solo turtle challenge run with this one...
