North Korea, the most isolated country in the world, has an international airline.
Air Koryo operates out of Pyongyang International Airport. At its height in 1998, the airline offered flights to destinations such as Vladivostok, Beijing, Macau, Bangkok, Sofia, Moscow, and Berlin. However, due to concerns about aircraft safety, the European Union banned the airline from using its airspace, leading to a significant reduction in its route network. Air Koryo exclusively uses aging Soviet or Russian aircraft, including Antonov, Ilyushin, and Tupolev models. In 2017, the United Nations imposed heavy sanctions on North Korea in response to ongoing intercontinental ballistic missile tests, further impacting the airline's operations. Currently, the airline operates flights to only a limited number of destinations, including Vladivostok, Shenyang, Beijing, Shanghai, and Macau.
