Israel has instructed Palestinians in northern Gaza to evacuate in anticipation of a ground offensive. Consequently, hundreds of thousands of Palestinians sought refuge in the southern part of the Gaza Strip.
But why don't they simply leave the Gaza Strip altogether?
The answer is simple they can't.
Israeli forces demolished the sole Palestinian-operated airport in 2001, and of the seven once-existing land border crossings, only three remain—two with Israel which are currently closed due to the total blockade of Gaza and one with Egypt, the Rafah crossing, which has also been closed shortly after Israel declared its complete blockade.
This prompts the question: Why doesn't Egypt open its border to let Palestinian refugees in?
While the border has been partially open since the beginning of the war for individuals with dual citizenship and trucks carrying foreign aid, Egypt has not allowed Palestinian refugees in, except for some medical emergencies. But why?
Well, there are two reasons for this:
Firstly Egypt is concerned about the number of Palestinian refugees for whom it would be responsible for an indefinite period of time, especially if Israel were to fully annex the Gaza Strip during its current conflict with Hamas.
Secondly, Egypt claims it does not have the financial resources to accommodate these hundreds of thousands of refugees, with 60% of Egypt's population already living near or below the poverty line.
