Synopsis: A groundbreaking compilation of eight classical music pieces visually interpreted by Disney animators, featuring Leopold Stokowski conducting the Philadelphia Orchestra and introductions by Deems Taylor. “Toccata and Fugue in D Minor” (Bach) is an abstract exploration of shapes and colors. An array of plants and creatures enchant in “The Nutcracker Suite” (Tchaikowsky). The most famous section features Mickey Mouse as an assistant to stern sorcerer Yen Sid in “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” (Dukas). “The Rite of Spring” (Stravinski) depicts the emergence of life on Earth. In “The Pastoral Symphony” (Beethoven), centaurs and cupids frolic as Greek gods look on. “Dance of the Hours” (Ponchielli) features a ballet performed by the unlikeliest of animal ballerinas. A scary “Night on Bald Mountain” (Moussorgsky), introduces the demon Chernabog, who summons nighttime ghosts and ghouls. But all are banished when the morning church bells ring and a solemn procession of monks makes it way through the countryside in the tranquil “Ave Maria” sequence (Schubert).

Trivia:
• Frames: 180,000
• Yen Sid (the sorcerer) is Disney spelled backwards.
• The film was presented in Fantasound, an early stereo system, devised at the Disney Studio, but which required theaters to be specially equipped. Because of the expense, the film originally opened in only 14 theaters.
• Walt Disney Productions and RKO Radio were given special Academy Awards: “To Walt Disney, William Garity, John N. A. Hawkins and the RCA Manufacturing Company for their outstanding contribution to the advancement of the use of sound in motion pictures.”
• A special Academy Award was given to Leopold Stokowski and his associates “for their unique achievement in the creation of a new form of visualized music.”
• New interest in the film in the 1970s led to a new sound track in 1982, with the orchestra conducted by Irwin Kostal, narration by Hugh Douglas, and a recording in digital stereo, but its full-length restoration in 1990 brought back the original sound track, while trying to duplicate some of the effects of the Fantasound presentation.
• Corey Burton replaced Deems Taylor on the 2000 DVD.
• It took 60 years, but in line with Walt Disney’s plan to add new segments regularly to the film, Fantasia/2000 retained The Sorcerer’s Apprentice but added eight new sequences.
