After you arrange a book in Word, instead of making a table of contents, you can create it in an automatic way, so how can the table of contents be automatically created in Word? If you want to automatically crate a table of contents, you need to set up chapters when typesetting, and it will take a lot of time to set chapters after you have typeset a book. Setting chapters mainly means that different chapters use different headings, for example, "Chapter 1" uses "Title" as the first-level heading; "Section 1 of Chapter 1" uses "Heading 1" as the second-level heading, "Subsection of Section 1 of Chapter 1" uses "Heading 2" as the third-level heading, and so on.

How to create table of contents in Word (4 steps, cann't set headings to Title style)

A book table of contents and content usually have different page numbers, so you need to set "section breaks" on the next page of the table of contents; Then you can set the page number and set the start page of the content section to the first page; Finally, reference a directory style to automatically generate a table of contents.

One. Step 1: Set the styles of chapter (How to create table of contents in Word?)

Different levels of chapters need to be styled with different levels of headings. All first-level headings are set to "Heading 1". All second-level headings are set to "Heading 2". All third-level headings are set to "Heading 3".

Note: You cannot set headings to the "Title" style, because headings set to that style does not generate a table of contents.

Two. Step 2: Set section breaks

Position the cursor before the first line on the first page. Select the "Layout" tab, click "Breaks", select "Next Page" under "Section Breaks", and insert a section break for the next page, which can be seen by clicking the "Show/Hide" Edit Mark icon in the "Home" tab.

Three. Step 3: Set the page number

Select the "Insert" tab, click "Page Number", select "Bottom of Page → Plain Number 2", then insert the page number; Select Page Number 2 of the first page of main text, click "Page Number", select "Format Page Numbers", open the "Page Number Format" window, select "Start at", click "OK", and then set the starting page number of the main text page to 1.

Step 4: Generate the table of contents

1. Double-click any blank space on the page, close the header and footer, position the cursor in the first line on the first page, select the "References" tab, click the "Table of Contents" icon, select a table of contents style, such as "Automatic Table 1", then the table of contents of the whole book will be automatically generated.

2. It should be noted here that the header and footer must be closed, otherwise many duplicate table of contents will be generated and consume a lot of time and computer resources. Mistakes lead to time-consuming and wasteful table of contents generation.

Update the table of contents

1. If a new chapter is added after generating the table of contents, you can update the table of contents, and there is "Update Table of Contents" in the upper left corner of the generated table of contents. If you want to change the styles of table of contents, you can also click the table of contents icon in the upper-left corner of the generated table of contents and select a style, such as "Automatic Table 2".

2. It is worth noting that to replace the auto-generated table of contents, you must select the automatic table of contents, if you choose the manual table of contents, you will not be able to generate the table of contents by chapter.

From the above operation, it can be seen that Word automatically generates a table of contents into four steps, that is, setting the chapter style, adding section breaks, inserting page numbers and changing the page numbers of the body to start from 1, and the last step is to generate a table of contents.
