Will Saudi Arabia and Israel soon be allies?
Israel and Saudi Arabia have recently grown closer. The Saudi government recently opened its airspace to flights from Israel, while Israel approved the transfer of the islands of Tiran and Sanafir from Egypt to Saudi Arabia. There is also reportedly an exchange of intelligence between the two countries.
But why are the two countries, which were arch-enemies for decades, now getting closer?
One reason is that Iran, the arch-enemy of both Israel and Saudi Arabia, has recently gained enormous influence in the region, particularly in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Yemen. In an effort to bring that Iranian influence under control, the two countries appear to be settling their differences for now.
In addition, the U.S. is mediating between the two sides, not purely out of goodwill, but because the U.S. also sees Iran as a threat and wants to isolate it as much as possible.
However, the Saudi population does not seem to support the full normalization of ties with Israel, as a majority of the population rejects diplomatic recognition of Israel.
