Sikkim, One Of The 28 States Of India, Situated In The Northeastern Part Of The Country, Within The Himalaya Mountain Range. Covering Roughly 7,096 Square Kilometres In Total Surface Area, Sikkim Is The Second Smallest State In India, After Goa.
One Of The 20 Landlocked States In India, Sikkim Shares It's Borders With Three Countries Which Are Bhutan, Tibet Autonomous Region Of China , And Nepal. It Shares Its Borders With Only One Indian State, Which Is West Bengal. Sikkim Extends Roughly 116 Kilometers From North To South, And Has A Maximum Width Of 65 Km From East To West. The State Is Divided Into 6 Districts For Administration Purposes.
With A Total Population Of Roughly 7,00,000 Inhabitants As Per Estimates , Sikkim Is The Least Populated State In India. Gangtok Is The Capital And The Most Populated City In Sikkim, With A Population Of More Than 100 Thousand Inhabitants. Other Major Cities Include Jorethang, Namchi, Geyzing, Mangan, Singtam, Pakyong And Rangpo.
Situated Within The Himalayan Mountain Range,
Sikkim Landscape Is Particularly Mountainous, The Elevation In The State Ranges From 280 Meters Above Sea Level In The South, To 8,585 Meters Up To The Summit Of Kanchenjunga In The North. The Teesta River, Along With Its Tributaries, Is A Significant River System In The Region, Crucial For Both Irrigation And Hydropower Generation. It Is The Largest River Of Sikkim And Originates In Its Northeastern Part.
Roughly Half Of Sikkim’s Land Area Is Covered With Forests. Half Of This Forest Cover Belongs To Kanchenjunga (Or Khangchendzonga) National Park Which Is Centered Around The Mighty Kangchenjunga, The World’s Third Highest Mountain Peak. The Peak Is Situated In The Border Region Between Sikkim And Nepal. With An Elevation Of Approximately 8,586 Meters Above Sea Level, It Is Second Highest Mountain Peak In India, After K2, Elevation (8,611 M) (Located In Pak Administered Kashmir).
The Official Languages Of The State Are English, Nepali, Sikkimese (Bhutia) And Lepcha. Additional Official Languages Include Gurung, Limbu, Magar, Mukhia, Newari, Rai, Sherpa And Tamang.
