STORYLINE:
Marwan Barghouti, a prominent Palestinian leader said Monday that by attempting to assassinate Palestinian leaders, Israel will not achieve peace but would trigger a Palestinian retaliation.
Barghouti was reacting to the publication by the Israeli Defence ministry on Sunday of a list of seven Palestinians it classes as "main terrorists".
The Israelis have demanded that the Palestinian Authority arrest the seven men.
In all, Israel has asked the Palestinians to arrest about 100 suspected militants.
On Saturday, Israeli helicopters fired two missiles near the car carrying Marwan Barghouti and his bodyguards in the West Bank town of Ramallah.
Barghouti, the leader of Yasser Arafat's Fatah group in the West Bank and one of the most visible Palestinian leaders, was shaken but unhurt in the attack.
He said Israel was trying to assassinate him.
The Israeli military made no official comment, but military sources, demanding anonymity, said the target was not Barghouti, but one of the bodyguards.
