What did Wehrmacht soldiers think of hand-to-hand combat?
Every Wehrmacht soldier who took part in hand-to-hand combat was usually awarded the ‘Close Combat’ badge. So for 15 hand-to-hand fights a ‘bronze badge’ was awarded. For 30 ‘silver’. For 50 ‘gold’. Despite the fact that any German soldier considered it an honour to receive such an award, few of them fearlessly went into battle. Here is what former Wehrmacht soldier Manfred Diener recalled about it. ‘Every soldier gets scared. It was terrible, absolutely terrible. There was a bayonet attack, soldier against soldier, with hand grenades that were practically thrown under each other's feet. After about fifteen minutes the fighting subsided, only three shadows came back from there. I ran away, I ran like a mad pig, I was ashamed.-The comrades who came back told me what had happened there. I sat quietly. It was the only time I chickened out. I've been in close combat sixteen times and never chickened out again.
