Heightmaps are essentially the starting point or skeleton of a environment, and is a great way to create highly detailed and optimized terrains for use in Films, Games, and the Metaverse.
Tip:
Probably also a good thing to keep in mind is when you make/create your heightmap define/plan the distance/size of it. This often could be based on details its details and shaping as well.
Example. 1 Pixel is equivalent to 1 Meter, or something. This is kind of important so that your hills/mountains are somewhat the correct size. You can make a 4k Heightmap that's meant to be 4 km (1 Pixel = 1 Meter) or a 4k Heightmap that's meant to be 16 kilometers (1 Pixel = 4 Meters).
