In this video, Gregory explains the working principles of a Microwave Diode Sampler used to downconvert the VCO signal in for a PLL design.
The 3.33GHz input signal is downconverted to a 12MHz IF, using a low-frequency LO of ~100MHz.
The diode sampler works on the time-domain, sub-sampling the microwave signal, thus aliasing the signal to a much lower IF. The sampling action is performed by a Schottky diode-bridge and a Step Recovery Diode pulse generator.
This design is part of the 10GHz signal source we are designing on the channel, and will be used in the phase-detector of the PLL.
