In this video we look at using Microsoft Excel to perform a simulation of a single round of a single player in the die rolling game called Pig. In Pig the player rolls the die -- if the value rolled is a 1, then the round is over and the score is zero. If the value rolled is not 1, the player can opt decide to stop or continue. If the player ever rolls a 1 in a round, the score for that round is zero. If the player opts to stop rolling before a 1 is rolled, then the score for that round is the sum of the die values rolled previously within the round. In the Numberphile video that inspired this Excel video, they performed a simulation of strategies of stopping on a particular score. In the Excel simulation done here, we roll until failure (rolling a one) and then imagine a perfect player stopping just before that. After performing a couple thousand samples, we looked at the average of a perfect player's score (around 20) and number of rolls (around 5) to achieve that score. Both quantities have "substantial" standard deviations (about the same size as the average). In Excel we used, RANDBETWEEN, IF, MAX, MATCH, AVERAGE, and STDEV
