Jazz saxophonist Oliver Nelson wrote this now-classic book for studying improv. It's full of melodic patterns that are useful in jazz and other styles. You can learn a lot by playing the exercises as written. And, of course, you can use Nelson's concepts to design your own patterns and phrases. I think it's a really valuable book!
