As they explored the home, particularly in the upper areas, it became apparent that they were not here alone. A voice called out from one of the chambers in threat of defence should they mean him harm. Arthur took the lead and tried to convince the man that they were here as an exploratory measure, not as Brotherhood of the Spider assassins.
The chemist, a man named Geillion Vazarro, told them many things about the cult he was working for, the now defunct Those Who Hear, and the one that they opposed, The Brotherhood of the Spider. He told them in a round about way that he was an apprentice to Silas Ledbetter and that his concoctions distilled from this dream aether were particularly potent. He told them of his friend Ezdagor, the author of the passage on the altar, and the former bearer of the amulet that Arthur now proudly displayed. Geillion was distraught at the passing of his friend, The Blessed One Ezdagor, and offered up several of his concoctions and Ezdagor's very own journal as assistance should they seek out the Brotherhood of The Spider as revenge. He also pointed them to Rook's Roost, a Trance den on the northern flank of the Gallow Fields. The trance den was within a bowshot of the site where Frell Sarini's body was found drowned and mutilated.
Perhaps most importantly, particularly to Zed, they also learned of the book, The Paginarum Lethargica, and the key, the Clavis Somnus. They learned that Ezdagor had gained the knowledge to pass from Lankhmar into a strange land that bordered it via these dimensional rifts and that with the proper knowledge one could travel between the city and this nightmare realm. Ezdagor has apparently made contact with some manner of wizard who dwelled in the realm beyond whom he referred to as The Human and the Chronomancer. Ezdagor apparently traded items and knowledge from Lankhmar's streets with this man in exchange for knowledge and some of the more otherworldly items the group had been coming across such as the amulet and these steel pegs used to keep the tears in the fabric of reality open.
With an alliance somewhat in place, and having sealed both dimensional tears, the group went off to see about Rook's Roost. They made a stop at Last Chance for some drinks, several games of chance and a bit of lunch. Asami tried her best to cheer the crowd, but it was clear that the mid-day throng was here to gamble, not laugh. Zed and Baccae were greeted a little cooly by Fatty as it was apparent that a couple of the fallow tables could use croupiers. Jho sampled some of Wan Fao's crab Rangoon as Arthur cleaned out and creeped out some tourists. It was clear that the group wasn't great for business this day and they took the hint.
As it was mid-afternoon and a quieter time, they dirtied themselves up slightly to look a little on the partied out side, and approached the Rook's Roost keen to take a look inside. They were greeted at the door though an eye slot and granted admittance after paying a fee of 5 bronze agols. As they sauntered in, somewhat out of place and lingering as to what to do next, they were confronted with the choice of drugs and their method of imbibing. Zed, Asami and Arthur instead broached the idea of meeting with Asnaan Sharrook, the proprietor, and Arthur proffered up a small incentive for that to happen. One of the numerous bouncers, who incidentally outnumbered the patrons at least 2 to 1, agreed and led them to a small, bare-bones office off of a wide corridor. A wizened turban-sporting man with a garish moustache greeted them as he locked the door to his spartan office behind him.
What occurred next was an uncomfortable and awkward conversation about Rook's knowledge of the Brotherhood of the Spider. He appeared confident towards the group posing the questions but nervous of a lingering threat that he could only vaguely hint at warning his interrogators about. In the end, he told them of Frell Sarini bringing him the book and key. Rook told them that he warned Frell about the dangers of such items but had no interest in them. He pointed them to a seer of sorts, the crippled lady, Madame Carrington or to one of the numerous bookstores in the area such as the Reality Wrinkle or the Winding Way. He told the group that Frell made a bad end just after his visit here and that they should be careful themselves, but that he was not adverse to doing business with them in the future.
Upon leaving, as the late afternoon fog began to roll in, the group began to descend the stairs to the lane way, Zed felt the strange sensation of wet feet that he felt in the Gallow Fields. The group discussed their options as the door to Rook's Roost locked behind them and they began to gather in the lane and chat. This time though, the feeling of wet feet was not a vision. The puddles and the damp cobbles began to flow with cool water as an entity burst from the puddles that had formed and rose up like a wall of water with arms!
