Google Cloud Storage - Bucket
Storage
GCP provides data storage options for your files on the cloud. These files can be your application files, backup files, media, setup & binaries, etc. GCP provides multiple storage services like:-
Cloud Storage
Persistent Disk on Compute Engine
Fully managed NFS (Network File Share) file servers in Filestore
Local SSD
Cloud Storage
Cloud Storage is storage over Google Cloud Platform. Cloud Storage is global, unlimited, scalable, object oriented & highly durable.
Unlimited storage with no minimum object size.
Worldwide accessibility and worldwide storage locations.
Low latency (time to first byte typically tens of milliseconds).
High durability (99.999999999% annual durability).
Geo-redundancy if the data is stored in a multi-region or dual-region.
A uniform experience with Cloud Storage features, security, tools, and APIs.
Key Features
Object Lifecycle Management (OLM) – OLM helps you to define the life of the object and based on that data will be deleted or moved to cheaper storage.
Object Versioning – Object Versioning allows you to store multiple copies of objects when they are deleted or overwritten.
Retention policies – You can set minimum retention duration for objects to stay on storage before deletion
Object holds – You can put a hold on an object to exclude them from deletion by any policy or setting.
Encryption keys – You can encrypt your data using encryption keys either created by you or supported by Cloud Key Management Service and both will be managed by you.
Uniform bucket-level access - Uniformly control access to your Cloud Storage resources by disabling object ACLs (Access Control Lists).
Requester Pays – Cloud Storage charged for data retrieval and each data requestor needs a project ID to bill for network charges, operation charges, and retrieval fees.
Bucket Lock – You can set data retention at Bucket level and the same will be applicable for all objects called Bucket Lock.
Pub/Sub Messaging – You can configure notifications for objects created, updated, or deleted in cloud storage using Pub/Sub service.
Cloud Audit Logs – GCP maintains admin activity logs and data access logs for your Cloud Storage resources. You can use them for future reference.
Object and bucket level permissions - Cloud Identity and Access Management (IAM) allow you to control who has access to your buckets and objects.
Cloud Storage Pricing Components and Always Free Usage Limit
Cloud Storage charged for data retrieval and data retrieval has 4 components to decide to price. Cloud storage also provides free access under your free trial or always free services. Always Free Usage limit can be reviewed against each component below.
Item Description Always Free Usage Limit
Data storage The amount of data stored in your buckets. Storage rates vary depending 2 components: Standard Storage – 5 GB per month
1) Storage class
2) Location of your buckets.
Network usage The amount of data read from or moved between your buckets. 1 GB from North America to each GCP egress destination (Australia and China excluded)
Operations usage The actions you take in Cloud Storage, such as listing the objects in your buckets. Operation can be of 2 types:- Class A Operations: 5,000
Class A: object adds, bucket and object listings Class B Operations: 50,000
Class B: object gets, retrieving bucket and object metadata
Retrieval and early deletion fees Applicable for data stored in the Nearline Storage, Coldline Storage, and Archive Storage classes. NA
Storage Classes
Cloud Storage provides 4 types of storage class on basis of storage duration and availability SLAs. You can choose storage classes according to your requirements for better pricing. Deletion of data before minimum storage duration will lead to additional charges.
Storage Class Minimum storage duration SLA Typical monthly availability1 Best to Use
Standard Storage
Nearline Storage
Coldline Storage
Archive Storage
Storage Bucket Locations
You specify a location for storing your object data when you create a bucket. There are different location types:
Storage Class Minimum storage duration Locations
region A region is a specific geographic place, such as London. You can select any available region
dual-region A dual-region is a specific pair of regions, such as Finland and the Netherlands. GCP provided 2 dual-region.
1.EUR4 - EUROPE-NORTH1 and EUROPE-WEST4.
2.NAM4 - US-CENTRAL1 and US-EAST1.
multi-region A multi-region is a large geographic area, such as the United States, that contains two or more geographic places. Objects stored in a multi-region or dual-region are geo-redundant. GCP provided 3 multi-regions.
1.ASIA - Data centers in Asia
2.EU - Data centers within member states of the European Union1
3.US - Data centers in the United States
