Tense 1980s Report on Israeli Settlements in the West Bank (1983)
On 25 January 1983, ITN's Godfrey Hodgson reported from the West Bank, one of the Palestinian Territories occupied by Israel since the Six Day War of 1967. Hodgson was reporting on the Israeli government's drive to build settlements in the territory, and the effect this was having on tensions between Israeli settlers and their Palestinian neighbours. The pace at which the Israeli government was building settlements had increased, despite US President Ronald Reagan having called for a freeze to settlement buildiing. Interviewing Bethlehem's Arab mayor, Elias Freij; Chairman of Israel's Cabinet committee on settlements, Professor Yuval Ne'eman; and Israel's opposition leader, Moshe Shachal.
