On 12 May 1993, ITN's David Chater reported on claims made by 'The Sun' newspaper that Britain's Security Service, more commonly known as MI5, bugged Diana, Princess of Wales and Prince Charles, Prince of Wales before they separated. The newspaper had in its possession the transcript of a tape of what they alleged was an argument between the two royals. Conservative Home Secretary Kenneth Clarke denied the claims of Security Service bugging, but shadow Home Secretary Tony Blair called on Clarke to disclose whether or not there was any evidence of MI5 illegally tapping the phones of members of the Royal Family. Buckingham Palace issued a statement that the royal couple were never together at Highgrove House at the time the recording was said to have been made.
