… As we mention at the beginning of this video … we here at GuitarBreakdown love Jazz Fusion stuff … from Allen Hinds, Scott Henderson, Michael Landau, Larry Carlton and Jimmy Herring. But there is nothing more fun then cranking an amp and playing some of the iconic 80’s and 90’s guitar riffs … Led Zeppelin, Van Halen, Whitesnake, AC/DC, Guns N’ Roses, Bon Jovi, Skid Row, Ozzy (the list is endless).
And don’t be fooled to think that rhythm guitar isn’t as much fun as lead guitar. The more you focus on rhythm playing … the more gigs you’ll get (because 80% of the time you are plying rhythm guitar). So it will help you immensely to work on your rhythm chops as much as you do your solo guitar techniques and licks.
In this Lesson we take a look at the tune Best of Both Worlds from Van Halen … off of the 5150 album. The rhythm parts in this tune are just awesome. The way Eddie breaks up chords … makes everything he plays sound so much more intricate then the two simple chords he is actually suggesting.
Take the ideas in this lesson and use them when jamming with friends or when writing your own rhythm parts. You probably won’t want to use the EXACT idea … but take the concept of what is going on here and really explore … just like you would with a cool pentatonic lick you learned. Expand on the idea and feel the wind beneath your wings. :)
