Allan Holdsworth - Melodic Jazz Fusion Guitar Lesson - Guitar Licks and Chords

In this first part of the four part guitar lesson we will try and teach some Allan Holdsworth. Let me start by saying ... REALLY ... I'm actually attempting this?

:)

Yes, I am fully aware of how deep this pool I'm about to dive into actually is. And I won't even try and fool myself into thinking I can do his playing justice. But with that said, I will try my best.

Allan Holdsworth is by far one of the (if not THE) most unique guitar players out there. From ultra smooth melodic lines to intense intervalic speed runs ... throw in a ton of complex chord shapes and a heavy dash of unorthordox thinking .... and Mmmm Mmmm ... I'm hungry.

Transcribing and playing Allan Holdsworth guitar parts is incredibly challenging ... even to the most seasoned guitar player. But learning a simple guitar lick, or a single guitar chord voicing, or a single measure of melody line by mr Holdsworth is one of the most rewarding things I can think of. There have been very few guitar players that I have transcribed (Scott Henderson being one of the other guitar masters i'd include in this statement), that I've found myself analyzing for hours after breaking down a simple 5 or 10 note lick.

There is so much to be learned in everything Allan Holdsworth plays. In part one of this guitar lesson we will take a brief look at the chords being played under this solo. We won't dive too deeply into Allan Holdsworth type chord voicings ... we will definitely revisit that in a future lesson (hopefully in the near future). However I will breakdown the progression and offer a few simple and basic chord voicings for those who might not be familiar with jazz style chords.

In part two, three and four of this guitar lesson we will dive into what I think is an amazingly melodic solo with a great forth interval guitar lick.

Again, this is a light introduction to Allen Holdsworth. Something I found to be challenging enough to want to learn but easy enough to digest being a first time Holdsworth-ian.

This guitar lesson is based off of an REH Instructional video Allen put out back in the early 1990's. I would highly advise buying this if you can find it. Beware though ... It is NOT a lick based instructional video. But there is a ton of information in the DVD (VHS when I bought it ... man, I'm old) ... and if you digest it slowly it will help your guitar playing by leaps and bounds.

Alright, enough yapping ... let's get to this!
