Outside the little Yorkshire town of Meltham, 71-year-old Army and Navy veteran Herbert Thorpe is taking a stand. Everything that gets his goat – trade unions, licentiousness, criminality, politicians – is being denounced, in huge white letters several feet high, on the side of his house.

The council are trying to get him to remove his message, but the 'Prophet of Meltham' is a formidable man who does not give way easily.

Clip taken from Nationwide, originally broadcast on BBC One, Wednesday 18 August, 1971.
