What is it like to find out that your ancestors were sent to work on sugar plantations?
More about the artist: tiny.cc/SancintyaMohiniSimpson
When Sancintya Mohini Simpson found out that her maternal ancestors were sent to South Africa as indentured labourers in the 1800s, she set about to share their untold stories through her art. It’s been a journey that’s allowed her and her mother to reflect on family trauma and look at the broader history of bonded labour. In this video, the artist takes us inside her studio to discuss the ideas behind kūlī / karambu, the work that she hopes helps share and acknowledge their stories.
