Australian seas are scary and dangerous but, each year, migrants risk everything to travel across these waters in search of hope. Artist Hayv Kahraman commemorates those who've drowned on these treacherous journeys in her work Bodies of Water. In this video, the Iraqi-Swedish-American artist reflects on her own migration story as a former refugee of Kurdish descent, and highlights the issues surrounding Australia's immigration politics. She describes the technique of Ebru marbling, a traditional Turkish art form which involves painting on water, and unpacks her inspirations for the piece.
